Abstract: | Discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of political analyses, with particular attention being paid to the Guttman scale of political attitudes. Factors affecting political attitudes are treated and the shortcomings of political analyses in South Africa are identified. This last is linked to the controversy on the role which beliefs and issues play in political behaviour and the author suggests that most political analyses, in South Africa and elsewhere, have incorrectly identified the dependent variable, which is not the political party chosen by the voter but rather his attitudes and beliefs.
