Abstract:In Africa, the development of opposition to the political power of fellow nationalists has not followed any uniquely African pattern, but in many cases there has been a trend or tendency, for newly independent civil governments to be threatened by a rising, and frequently young, military power group. A number of military-sponsored coups have taken place in the continent during recent years, including one in the Sudan in November, 1958. But the October 1964 revolution in the Sudan was the first case in recent African history where there was a successful revolt by a civilian population against a military government. After a brief political history of the Sudan before the October 1964. Revolution follows a day to day account of the events and the political development during the days of 21-29 October 1964, Some biographical information on the leadership of the United National Front as it finally emerged is added. The author arrived in Khartoum immediately following the outbreak of the first disturbances which led to the overthrow of the military regime of General El-Farik Ibrahim Abboud. Notes.
