Abstract:A survey of the tribal religious composition in seven administrative districts, where the proportions of Christians, Muslims, and others seem to vary considerably. Beyond the Hamitic group, the Arabs, the Waswahili, the Digo, and the Pokomo are the most highly islamized groups. The Taita are 63 percent Christian, while African tribal religion is of frequent occurrence among the Giryama and the Duruma. On the whole the pagan Giryama is the largest religio-tribal group, followed by the Muslim Digo, the Christian Taita, the pagan Duruma, and the Muslim Arabs. The analysis is based on information from the 1962 Census. 10 tables, notes.
