Title:On political order
Author:Dudley, B.J.
Periodical:The Nigerian Journal of Economic and Social Studies
Geographic term:Africa
Subject:political stability
Abstract:After discussing the judgements of several writers - e.g. Fanon, Zolberg, Apter - on the general pattern of politics which developed in the states of Africa after independence, the A., in accordance with Huntington's formulation postulates a model specifying that political order is possible when a) the constitutive rules of the polity reflect the social structure of the society; and b) the action set formed by the constitutive rules finds expression in the regulative rules of the system. In this form a complex set of relationships is put together in a few statements. To see what it involves in concrete terms the conditions mentioned under a) and b) are analysed in expanded form under the two categories of aggregative structures and decision structures. A final section deals with political order and social communication. Notes, figure.
