Abstract:Census data can and will be valued for the indication it provides on general trends but it has been recognised that underlying such general trends there may be an astonishing range of local variety such that when it comes to the anticipation and planning of action at the local level, such general information hardly provides any reliable guidance. Therefore this paper aims at examining census data with respect to the peculiarities of individual districts. In preparation for the analysis of information along these lines from the recent (1979) census some ideas were tried out on data related to the Kenya Census 1969. The main concern of this paper is a possible explanation for migration from rural districts, either to other rural areas or to urban centres: Introduction - Planning, statistics and behaviours - Density and densities - Agricultural land in terms of economic potential - The association between rural population density and outmigration - Types of migration - Types of migration per district of origin - Conclusion.
