Abstract:This case study of farmers' time-budgets in Bukoba District helps to interpret labour time availability in smallholder agriculture and hence the implications for policies that release labour time for increased output and productivity. Crucial factors that constrain labour time availability are high morbidity and mortality. In other words, the farmers live in a perilous environment. Man's only adaptation to it is by social cohesion that guarantees security and mutual help, hence the observed involvement in social activities. Notes.
