Abstract:After a short description of the Hurutshe reserve and the background to the events, the author analyses the crisis of 1957, which started with the arrival of a new Native Commissioner and with the introduction of passes for women, by answering the following questions: 1) Why did the government decide to issue reference books in rural areas and why in particular in the Zeerust district? 2) what was the nature of the response and the forms of resistance? 3) what was the role of the African National Congress?
