Abstract: | This paper attempts to discuss, in a general way, mmonwu as a type of Igbo drama. Although the mmonwu concept is variously interpreted by different Igbo groups (some regard every masked figure as mmonwu, while others do not), generally speaking, mmonwu figures are accepted and revered as masked beings from the other world. This paper, therefore, examines what makes mmonwu a form of Igbo drama. In particular, the structure of the mmonwu theatre is discussed in some detail. Fig., notes. |
