| Abstract: | Short review of Dr. Nyerere's political pamphlet 'Democracy and the Party System'. This characteristically sparkling and controversial document is a spirited contribution to the advantages for newly independent African states of adopting a one-party system as this has been argued by the spokesmen of West Africa, notably by Dr. Nkrumah and M. Keita. Dr. Nyerere's pamphlet will counter a lot of loose or silly thinking about contemporary African politics. It pointfully illustrates the real situation of most African countries today. What remains to be seen is how far the one-party system he is advocating is capable of changing that situation. |
