| Abstract: | On the basis of a micro-level case study carried out in 1975, the author aims to show the nature of the relations that exist between peasants, notably those in the Balante village of Birkama in Casamance in South Senegal, on the one hand, and capitalism and the state on the other. Against the background of conflicts, including strike action, that took place in 1975 in the shrimp fishing industry in Casamance, the complex and constantly shifting relations between the diverse groupings are analysed: peasants and fishermen, industry, middlemen and government officials. Opposition between the different state departments and between the groupings with vested interests offers an explanation for the short-term success of the peasants and fishermen, ostensibly the weakest grouping, in the shrimp fishing conflict.
