Abstract:Based on research conducted in the People's Republic of Benin in 1976-77, the author considers one dimension of health service utilisation - namely, alternatives for obstetrical assistance utilised by women in a Bariba region of Benin. A set of factors influencing women's choices of obstetrical care is delineated, including features of the disorder, features of midwives, and features of clients, and conclusions are drawn as to the way in which these combine in the decision-making process of pregnant Bariba women.
