Abstract: | Analyses both the causes and consequences of one of the many revolts against French demands for African recruits for their army fighting against the Germans in the 1914-1918 war: that of the Bariba of French Borgu in 1916-1917. It shows the way in which a recently conquered African people were able to hold the French administration to ransom by military resistance over a period of nearly four months. Notes. |
