Abstract: | This paper is concerned with the 'actual' economic role of the public sector through its aggregate expenditure impact, the collective influence of its economic policies and its ability to control and direct the decisions of the private sector. The role of the public sector in Rhodesia is much less emphasised than that of the private one; it is seldom seen as a leading 'economic' sector or as a catalystic element in the economic history. Sections: Interpretation of the public sector role - Definition of the public sector - Quantitative evaluation of public sector expenditure impact - Public sector investment impact - The role of government in the labour market - Public sector control - Concluding perspectives.
