Abstract:An age-old type of taxation which has been reported in Ethiopia for close on half a millennium was the requisitioning by soldiers or other travellers of the produce of the peasantry or other supplies from the lands through which they passed. The coming to Ethiopia at about the end of the 19th century of the printing press was followed in the second decade or so of the 20th century by a notable development: the issue of printed Amharic requisition forms for provisions taken by soldiers. The advent of printed tax documents, discussed in the article, represents a significant development in the modernisation of Ethiopia's traditional system of taxation, as well as a notable achievement of Täfäri Mäkonnen regency period.
