Abstract: | Describes the introduction of tax collection in Malawi by Sir Harry Johns ton, who arrived in the Lower Shire area of Malawi in July 1891. Sections: ease of collection - developments, 1900-1940 - tax and traditional life - the post-second world war period. Conclusion: Johnston placed great importance upon the hut tax because he needed the money. With minor exceptions it has increased annually since the foundation of the protectorate in 1891. Notes. |
