| Abstract: | Most Marxist historical analyses have discussed conflict within precolonial African societies primarily in static terms. However, in order more fully to understand conflicts and/or crises and the changes they may have brought, one must gain a greater understanding of the dynamics of the relationship between the parties that made the conflict and/or crisis possible. It is from this perspective that the author examines the nature of the relationship between ruler and ruled, privileged and nonprivileged in the polity of Anlo (southeastern coast of Ghana) during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, the way this relationship was structured by the political, economic, and ideological systems, and the importance of this relationship for analysing the nature of conflicts and/or crises within that society.
