Abstract: | This paper considers how the Mbukushu rainmaking chieftainship is a political adaptation to their riverine environment. Thought the Mbukushu are only a small and politically weak tribe, they have maintained their tribal traditions and identity. Even while being ruled by powerful peoples such as the Barotse and Tawana, they were able to maintain relative independence through isolation and the control of the rain-medicine by the rainmaking chiefs of the Mbukushu.
