Abstract: | Some people refer to the 19th century Jihad in Hausaland as the 'Fulani Jihad' because of the race composition of its leaders, others name it 'Sokoto Jihad' because it originated from Sokoto. To others still, it was the 'Jihad of Uthman Dan Fodio' because it was inspired by him. The differences in title notwithstanding, one thing is common: it was the only Jihad in 19th century Hausaland and the most revolutionary in the history of West Africa. The Jihad brought the Hausa States for the first time under the jurisdiction of a unified administration in Sokoto. This essay seeks to explain: 1) how the Jihad was carried out in Kano; 2) the dominant role played by the Fulanis in Jihad; 3) to highlight the stiff but abortive resistance put up by the Hausas. - Notes, ref. |
