| Abstract: | The second half of the nineteenth century was a time of great religious change in Jolof (a Wolof kingdom), for in this period Islam progressed from a set of beliefs practised by a minority of the population to one in which the majority participated. The major catalyst in this religious change was Shaikh Amadu Ba, who began preaching a message of return to pure Islam in early 1869. The article examines the Islamic presence in Jolof prior to Amadu's jihad, the course of the jihad, and its effects on the people in the area. Map, notes. |
