Abstract:This paper focuses on the history curriculum in the schools of French West Africa in the period from 1918 to 1938. Specifically, it investigates the frames used to investigate the past, the sources for the generation of historical data, and the substance and interpretation of history taught in the schools. The discussion is based on analysis of school law, curricular guides, teacher manuals, and texts used in the schools, as well as curricular materials disseminated by the government's pedagogical journals.
