Title:The village polytechnic movement in Kenya
Author:Wanjala, E.A.
Periodical:Education in Eastern Africa
Geographic term:Kenya
Subject:school leavers
Abstract:To help the primary school leavers who have very few job opportunities or the necessary skills to take jobs, the National Christian Council of Kenya launched in 1966 the Village Polytechnic Movement. The Village Polytechnic offers a variety of training courses, aimed at meeting the local needs. It is restricted to the village level, because only a small community is able to assess its own needs and opportunities. Between 1973 and 1974 the Government will give grants-in-aid to a total of 60 projects. (See also: Community Development Journal 8 (1973), 2, p. 104-107).
