Abstract: | Brief survey of the linguistic situation in the main boys' secondary school in El Fasher, capital of Oarfur Province, Sudan. The investigation was conducted in February 1969 when the author stayed in El Fasher. One aim of the investigation was to attempt to document the multilingual situation at a high educational level. Another aim was not to elicit answers to questions based on a pre-conceived hypothesis about language distribution and usage, but to ascertain some facts on which to base the formulation of such hypotheses. The results produced sufficient facts to draw conclusions about some of the basic elements in the multilingual situation in Darfur, and as a result to ask certain further crucial questions about the role and use of language within this province. Notes, tables, model of questionnaire. |
