Abstract:Perhaps the main problem confronting rural development is best summarised by the term land pressure: the specific form of overpopulation under subsistence agriculture. The basic objective of rural development should be to assist in relieving this land pressure. The author describes one rural development model used to this end in the Sanyati-Gokwe area of Tribal Trust Land in Rhodesia. The model consists of several components: an irrigated agricultural estate, an irrigation settlement scheme, an embryo town, and an outer region. The author suggest that this is an effective model for mult-purpose rural development, and one which attacks the problem of land pressure from several angles simultaneously. Tab.
