Abstract:The pedigree of Nigeria's armed forces (the oldest formalized military unit in West Africa) is traced through the Hausa Militia (1864), the Royal Niger Constabulary (1893), the West African Frontier Force (1897), the Royal West African Frontier Force (1928), the Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment and the Nigerian Military Forces (1956), the Royal Nigerian Military Forces (1959) and Army (1960) down to the Nigerian Army (1963). This research note does not go beyond the end of World War II. Three points worth noting for post-1945 documentation are indicated. Notes, diagram, photos.
