Abstract:Assessment of the achievements of Ahmad ibn Idris al-Fasi (c. 1758-1836), a teacher, mystic, and theologian of Moroccan origin. It seems certain that he 1) altered Sufism by keeping the traditional framework of mystical orders, but changed the content of Sufism, substituting Muhammad as an alternative for God as the final objective of mystics, 2) that he supported change in the legal field also, and probably supported ijtihad, in the sense of an informed and well-supported individual judgment, 3) that there are at least two distinct traditions about him, a popular one and a more learned tradition recorded by students.
