Abstract: | The account of the hajj of Isa Hassan Sulaiman al-Kanawi was to Major Wingate in 1892 when he was collecting material on Rabih b. Fadlalah for the Intelligence Department of the Egyptian War Office. Isa gives what must be a typical account of the trials and tribulations of a pelgrimage, and it is particularly interesting for its description of Rabih. It was at time, about November 1890, that Rabih - the Sudanese solider formerly a follower of the famous Al-Zubayr Pasha and at this period a follower of the Mahdi - finally moved into the basin of the River Shari and long afterwards prepared for the advance northwards which was to take him through Bagirmi to Bornu. In addition Al-Hajj Isa's account of Rabih's relations with the neighbouring states and their attempts to counter his threat are an invaluable contribution to our knowledge of the diplomacy of the period.
