Abstract:The account of the hajj of Isa Hassan Sulaiman al-Kanawi was to Major Wingate in 1892 when he was collecting material on Rabih b. Fadlalah for the Intelligence Department of the Egyptian War Office. Isa gives what must be a typical account of the trials and tribulations of a pelgrimage, and it is particularly interesting for its description of Rabih. It was at time, about November 1890, that Rabih - the Sudanese solider formerly a follower of the famous Al-Zubayr Pasha and at this period a follower of the Mahdi - finally moved into the basin of the River Shari and long afterwards prepared for the advance northwards which was to take him through Bagirmi to Bornu. In addition Al-Hajj Isa's account of Rabih's relations with the neighbouring states and their attempts to counter his threat are an invaluable contribution to our knowledge of the diplomacy of the period. Notes, appendices, photo-copies.
