Abstract:Discussion of the life and work of religious scholars in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Borno, emphasizing three individuals who knew each other well and who resided for some part of their lives in Borno: Muhammad al-Wali b. Sulayman b. Abi Muhammad al-Fallati al-Kabawi al-Baghirmi al-Barnawi (or al-Wali), Muhammad b. Muhammad al-Fullani al-Kashnawi al-Barnawi (or al-Kashnawi), and Muhammad b. Muhammad al-Fullani, known as Bindu or Binduwu. These scholars are important for two reasons: first, the results of their scholarship exerted considerable influence throughout West Africa and, in the case of one of them, in Egypt. Secondly, although they were well trained in all the classical Islamic sciences, they also pursued studies in what might be called the esoteric sciences, especially those based upon the esoteric significance and power of words, letters and numbers, and the use of phrases, letters and numbers in the manufacture of amulets and talismans.
