Abstract: | The author takes the Kalanga word Mwari - which is the name used for the oracular High God of the Matopo Hills in south-western Rhodesia - and compares it with similar single words taken from a variety of other eastern, central and southern African languages. He argues that the results of this comparison tell something about the original significance of the Mwari cult. The name Mwari in fact dates from a very early period of cultic observance in south western Rhodesia. Notes. |
