Abstract:The author combines written and oral material with linguistic and ethnographic data to describe some developments - the description of these developments is often in hypothetical terms - in the religious history of the Bemba (northeastern Zambia). Purpose of this article: to add to the existing histories of the politics and trade of these people, a historical dimension of religion; to test the effectiveness of combining various types of evidence for reconstructing the history of a society whose traditions have been transmitted orally; to suggest dimensions which further research can explore in this or other African societies whose religions have received little historical consideration by scholars. Notes, table, maps.
