Abstract: | In 1893 Sir Marshall Clarke, the successful administrator of Basutoland, was appointed as British Resident in Zululand. The Basutoland example could not be followed entirely. The Sotho were welded together in a struggle for survival, while the Zulu society was a divided society. Clarke's aim was to modify gradually the inherent fissiparous tendency of the Zulu socio-political system. The annexations of Zululand to Natal in 1879 made an end to his administration. Notes. |
