| Abstract: | This paper is based on material collected during an 18-month field trilp, from January 1956 to June 1957, and has two objectives: to add to the descriptive literature on the institution of slavery in Africa; and to analyse the function and structure of slavery within the socio-cultural environment of a kinship society. Among the Ila slaves occupied a transient status with slaves being gradually incorporated into the society. This form of slavery seems widespread in East and Central Africa. The analysis describes the particular form, organization, and status of slavery and the underlying principles structuring the slave relationship. Bibliography. |
