Abstract:Evalution of the gradually changing position of Muslim leaders of marabouts, and their role in Senegalese life and politics. The national political power of the marabouts is still substantial in the mid-1980s, although less than it was one or two decades ago. Barring a major catastrophe, when the brotherhoods might disappear or have a brief upsurge, they will decline further as years go by. But, in 1985, the marabouts still demand and receive favours for their support, and they act as both a brake and a catalyst to development efforts in rural Senegal. Notes.
