Abstract: | The explanation that the Baganda accepted Christianity because it was truer than their traditional religions and Islam because its moral standards were equivalent to their own does not answer the central questions: Why did the Baganda part from their old religions? What did the foreign religions offer that the old ones lacked? What were the circumstances under which the Baganda adopted foreign religions? To the author's opinion the answer must be searched for from within the Ganda society at that time. The author traces in that context the changes that took place in that time in Ganda society. Sections: Changes in religious beliefs - The social sector - The economic sector - The political sector. Notes. |
