Abstract:In East Africa the Ithana-asharya are few in number and consist largely of descendants of the Khoja Muslims from India. The jamaat (local congregation) is the centre and heart of the organisation. Primarily it denotes the people gathered together. The activities of the congregation are: the building of a mosque, hostel and school. It also provides welfare and assistance of a wide-ranging kind as well as business contacts and information. The article gives an outline of the history of some of the most important jamaats in Zanzibar, Pemba, Tanzania, Kenya, Zaire and Uganda. Notes.
