Abstract: | Within a Ugandan context the author investigates how European ideas and theories are transferred and brought to work in an African setting, and traces how Africans receive these European ideas. The focus is on the European agents working in Africa more than on the Africans themselves. Specifically the author investigates what significance can be assigned to the European agents' qualitative assessment of Africans and their capacity, taking as case study the founding of a church with the introduction of a church constitution, in casu the emerging relationship between the European agency, the Church Missionary Society, in Uganda and the new Anglican church as this becomes the focal point in the constitutional settlement and the major cause for disagreement between the European actors themselves.
