Abstract:More than half a century ago the Rev. J.K. MacGregor, a missionary of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland at Calabar, had jotted down some field notes collected at various times from different Efik informers. Some of these notes he handed to Lieutenant L.W.G. Malcolm, then stationed at Calabar with the 3rd Batallion of the Nigeria Regiment. Many years ago Malcolm passed these notes to the author of the present article. Mr. Jeffreys reproduces those notes with some slight re-arrangement of their order, preceded by notes of his own on witchcraft among the Ibibio, the parent tribe of the Efik. Mr. Jeffreys has worked for some twenty years as an administrative officer in the British Colonial Service among the Ibibio of the Calabar Province, meeting them for the first time in early 1915.
