Abstract: | In this article the author argues that there has not been a sort of unilinear form of development: from hunters and gatherers, to nomadic pastoralism to agriculture. Hunters and gatherers were a part of a wider social system of agriculturalists and pastoralists, which had, over time, adapted to the physical and social uncertainties of a precarious environment. The conclusion is that hunting and gathering is only a mode of production and cannot refer to any culturally distinct group of people. The article is followed by a comment by Steven Harvey, who puts that hunters and gatherers are both a group of people and a mode of production, on the basis of some primary works on hunters and gatherers from other parts of the world.
