Abstract:It appears that there is morphological marking of questions in Hausa which has not been previously recognized and that therefore part of the pitch assigment in questions has to be ascribed to the tonemic/phonological level rather than the intonational level. This 'special marker' is a Lo tone question morpheme q which occurs at the end of Yes/No questions and Q-word questions, regardless of the type of intonation employed. The purpose of this paper is to document the existence of this q morpheme in Hausa. First its phonological manifestations are described, then its relation to interrogative intonation is discussed, and finally its etymology is explained. Ref., sum.
