Abstract:In terms of its semantics, negation in Igbo can be seen as an act: the act of denying. Considered from the point of view of its syntax and phonology, it is a grammatical process by which the affirmative sentences are converted into negatives. It is in the light of negation as a grammatical process that this study principally examines simple sentence negation in Igbo. Adequate attention is given to the interplay of its syntax, phonology and semantics. Aim of the study is to provide a more comprehensive and more insightful grammatical description of Igbo negative sentences. Notes, ref.
