Abstract:Ideophones are an important though neglected aspect of Igbo language studies. Their importance stems from the fact that they illustrate an abundant provision of vocabulary in Igbo language for the expression of emotion - idea or thought within Igbo culture. As ideophones are used extensively in Igbo in everyday speech and in traditional expressions a closer look at onomatopaeic and phonaesthetic ideophones is presented in this paper: Definition - Functional and phonological approach - Nouns - Adjectives - Conclusion. Notes.
