Abstract: | Significant linguistic generalisations are being missed as a result of the claim that the ideophone in Yoruba is basically either an adverb, or a noun, rather than being a distinct lexical category on its own. In fact the same nominal compound formation rules that apply to verb phrases also apply to predicative ideophones; therefore predicative ideophones show a clear similarity to verbals in this respect.
