Abstract:Aims to briefly review some of the more recent studies on military coups and regimes in Africa within the framework of a broader analysis of the state of the sub discipline. Most of the research focuses on three broad, and inter-linked areas of analysis: 1) the political sociology and/or historiography of African armies, 2) the preconditions for military intervention in the political scene, 3) the military as rulers. Sections: African military historiography - Prerequisites for military intervention - The military as rulers - Some recent studies. Notes.
