Abstract: | This paper attempts to describe and assess a particular adult education scheme Sir Milton Margai spear-beaded in Sierra Leone in the 1940s. The main aim of the scheme was to introduce modern ideas and methods in hygiene, midwifery and childcare, to young girls receiving 'education for womanhood', through the Bundu society, the female secret society of Sierra Leone. The scheme, and Sir Milton's persistence and achievement in leading it, have to be seen in the context of traditional secret societies being in the 1940s a powerful source of education and knowledge for most people in Sierra Leone.
