Abstract: | Takes up the issue of the cost of university education borne by the student and the society, and argues that both the student (via private returns) and the society (via externalities) benefit from the student's education. Moreover, its shows that from a purely private return-to-investment approach, the costs presently assigned to the student are justified. Because of this, and for reasons of resource limitation, the paper frowns at the idea of making university education completely free in Nigeria. Finally, it recognises that not all families may be in a position to bear the private costs of university education even when they know that it is a worthwhile venture, thus, a students' loan programme (graduated on the basis of family needs). Is being suggested as a possible solution. App., fig., notes, ref., tab. |
