Abstract: | This article attempts to provide an analysis of the recurrent costs of higher education in Nigeria. In the process of carying out the analysis the variation in faculty costs and the possible reasons responsible for the variations are highlighted. The analysis is restricted to the 1974/75 academic year and to the University of Ibadan. The findings of the paper are: a) that at the faculty level, the unit cost of classroom-based courses are cheaper than the laboratory-based courses and that among the faculties, the Faculty of Social Sciences is the cheapest and the Faculty of Medicine is the most expensive; and b) that the unit costs are influenced to a very large extent by the stadent-teacher and student-non-teacher ratios and that this varied from one faculty to the other in 1974/ 75. The article ends by a) 'highlighting the limitations in the study which are mainly due to lack of sufficient data and information, and b) suggesting areas for further research. Notes, tab. |
