Abstract:At the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth, the United States of America and the Government of Tunis tried to pursue a policy of good understanding in spite of some crises and misunderstandings between them. The United States also undertook various steps and measures to protect her important trade in the Mediterranean through negotiations, treaties (e.g. that signed with the Bey of Tunis in August 1797), costly presents or cash, and at times through war (e.g. the siege of Tripoli, during which the crew of the 'Philadelphia'. were made prisoner and later released against a ransom of $ 60,000). The Americans maintained a naval force in the Mediterranean which was instructed to protect 'effectually the commerce and seamen of the United States against Tripolitan cruiser, on the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean and adjoining seas'.
