Abstract: | The Tugela Basin (the drainage basin fo the Tugela River) is a region some 11, 200 square miles in extent, or approximately one-third of the total area of Natal, roughly rectangular in sharpe, and joined from its situation in the hinterland of the province to the river's mouth by a narrow tongue about 50 miles long. The first two parts of this article describe the industrial facilities and natural resources of the region, and the factors which have resulted in its relative inability (i.e. compared with the main insutrial areas) to attract secondary industry to its environs. The third part takes a look at the case for emphasising heavy insustries in any industrialisation 'programme' that may be undertaken in the basin. References. |
