Abstract:Describes the development of the bureaucracy in the maritime trade, the complexity of its system of exchange trade and later on of the gold trade, and the trade's impact on indigenous political institutions. Although chiefs in the towns of the Gold Coast were already involved in trade negotiations when the maritime trade began, this involvement became more pronounced when foreign companies by means of treaties claimed land, by which however the chief's jurisdiction was acknowledged. According as a chief's position of power was linked with his ability to promote trade, the more pressure was exercised on the continuity of his reign if based on traditional sources of power. Notes.
