Abstract:Description of background, methodology and problems with respect to a survey commissioned in early 1983 by the Zimbabwe Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. The survey aimed to establish the use of outdoor recreational areas in Zimbabwe, as well as the possible future demands upon those areas, in order to facilitate rational forward planning of the Parks and Wild Life Estate and other areas of outdoor recreation. The survey was divided into three parts: a demand and preference study, a user satisfaction study, and a conflict of interest study. It was prompted amongst others by the problems facing the tourist industry: the uncertainty of foreign tourism, the falling numbers of local tourists since 1980, the lack of information about the local market, and the conflicts between peasant farming communities and protected areas of nature, as well as the longer-term conflict between tourist demands and ecological preservation.
