Abstract:Purpose of this preliminary report is to appraise the functions and other characteristics of trading centres in Central 'Buganda (the districts of West and East Buganda, the counties of Singo and Bugujju in Mubende district. Excluded: the offshore islands and the Kampala urbanized area). 64 trading centres with a size of more than 10 shops and containing more than 80% of all shops in the area were examined. The trading centres have over the years emerged as viable commercial units and are to all intents and purposes the nodes at which the spatial articulation of the rural economy and society at large takes place. The Africans and Asians operating at these centres differ in the level of capital they command and this has led to the domination of the specialised commercial functions by the Asians. P.S.: After the completion of this survey, drastic changes took place in the economy of the area and involved the departure of all non-citizen Asian traders from Uganda.
